This step-by-step guide is an excellent resource for even the most prepared Day Care Center. The manual will aid staff in assessing hazards and preparing a disaster response plan. It is an equally valuable resource for parents who are concerned about their child's safety while in a day care center or after school program. It can also be used as a family guide for assessing hazards in the home and for preparing a family emergency response plan.
The author, Nicole L. Child has a B.A. degree in Management and a J.D. from the University of California Hastings College of Law. She has served on the Board of Directors of two day care centers. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Child worked for more than ten years at the University of California at San Francisco where she began a Working Mother's Support Group.
Ms. Child is a mother and civil litigation attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the time of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Ms. Child's oldest child was a toddler in full time day care in San Francisco. As a result of her experience in the Loma Prieta Earthquake, she spent six months doing research for the manual. As she wrote in the forward of the book:
After the dust settled (so to speak) and our lives finally returned to normal, I conducted a survey of all Day Care Centers in San Francisco to determine their state of preparedness in the event of another such disaster, or worse. While most of the centers conformed to the State's requirements for disaster planning, few had any specific earthquake plans such as stocking supplies of food and water. It was not that centers didn't want to be preparedthey simply didn't know what kind of plans were needed or how to go about organizing a comprehensive plan.
The manual includes:
Sample forms including sample Emergency preparedness Plan
Ways to deal with children's fears and anxieties
Hypothetical scenarios for discussion
Food Storage Table and Emergency Supply Inventory
Identifying alternative sites for the relocation and release of children in an emergency
