Kids to cook !

If your preschooler has asked to cook or help in the kitchen, this is just the book for you!

Why do kids like cooking and why should parents encourage them to cook? Because cooking is fun for kids and they can get messy and lick their fingers! Parents should want kids to cook because it can foster independence, self-confidence and the development of organizational skills. Cooking also serves as a way to teach science, math and social science concepts as well as helping young children learn about safety in the kitchen.

The author, Denise M. Koopman is available to give workshops for parents and day care centers on cooking with preschoolers. In her workshops she encourages parents to let their preschooler explore the joy of preparing foods they like to eat as well as providing tips for introducing new and different foods. The Preschooler becomes the “Chef” while the parent participates as the Chef's Assistant! Through the shared experience of cooking together, both parent and child can learn together. Ms. Koopman brings not only her wonderful sense of humor to the topic, but her own experience in serving as the Assistant Chef for her two sons, ages 9 and 11.

The Right Stuff

In the introduction for parents, Ms. Koopman points out that having the right equipment is essential for a preschooler to successfully accomplish cooking tasks in the kitchen. Ms. Koopman also describes the three “Kitchen Personalities” she has come to recognize in Preschool Chefs.

The Great Grocery Store Safari

Ms. Koopman provides tips for going on "The Great Grocery Store Safari" and ways in which you can turn a trip to the supermarket into an adventure with your Preschool Chef.

There are more than 90 simple recipes such as Peter Rabbit's Potato Salad, Pretzel People, Monkey Bread, Stone Soup, Simple Simon Cookies, One Fish—Two Fish Tortillas, and numerous variations which a child can put together themselves.

The book is illustrated with the whimsical drawings of a highly talented artist, who is studying animation at California Institute of the Arts. You can view her work on her web site.
